Wong Cheung 黃祥 (1902 - 1989), also known as Gat Suen 吉旋, was born in Pun Yu 番禺, a district of Guang Zhou City 廣州市 in Guangdong Province 廣東省. When he was eight years old his grandfather thought he was very small and weakly and so began teaching him kung fu to strengthen his body, teaching him an inner strengthening practice called Sam Jin Tit Sin Kuen 三輾鐵線拳, meaning “three wraps of iron thread”. When Wong was 10 years old he contracted smallpox. The nearest doctor, named Leung Shu Wing 梁樹榮, who was familiar about smallpox lived 50 miles away in Duk Gong Village 讀崗村. Therefore, Wong’s family hired three workers to carry him to Duk Gong Village. Wong stayed at Dr. Leung's clinic to receive treatment until he recovered around a month. To appreciate his effort of recovered him from smallpox, Wong recognized Dr. Leung as his godfather.

Dr. Leung was not only a doctor, but also a martial arts expert. Next to his clinic, there was a courtyard where he had set up several types of training dummies, one was "Mui Fa Jong 梅花椿” (108 Pin Plum Flower Dummy), and another was “Gau Chi Moh Poon Jong 九齒磨盤椿” (Nine Pin Grinder Dummy). Dr. Leung practiced the dummies before dawn every day. Master Wong Cheung was very interested and ask Leung to teach him. Dr. Leung agreed immediately. Since then Wong went to Dr. Leung's home every winter holiday to learn martial arts and the skill of dummies. Wong then learnt all Dr. Leung's martial arts in a few years.

In his 14 years old, Wong Cheung followed his uncle and went to Guangzhou where he worked in a fruit wholesaler. Soon after he started working, there he was surprised that a master Fu Man (傅文) who was the brother of the famous Bagua Chiang 八卦掌 expert Fu Jun Sung (傅振嵩), taught Lung Ying Bagua Chiang (龍形八卦掌) (Dragon-shape Bagua Palm) at the fruit company. Wong was very interested in Bagua Chiang. He then secretly watched and learned the Bagua Chiang. One year later, workers of fruit wholesaler gradually lost interest in Bagua Chiang. The number of people learning was gradually decreasing.

One day the duty worker of fruit wholesaler spotted Wong knowing Bagua Chiang and told Fu. Fu was surprised and asked Master Wong to show it out. After seeing it, Fu asked Master Wong how he learned the Bagua Chiang. Wong admitted that he secretly learned from Fu. Fu knew that Master Wong had a talent form martial arts, so he taught Master Wong Dragon-shape Bagua Palm for free. In just one year, Master Wong could master the eight forms of Dragon-shape Bagua Chiang.

When Master Wong was 18 years old (year 1920), Wong Cheung arrived Hong Kong from Mainland. He started working as a gardener for a British family on Bowen Street 寶雲道, near Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island. Every morning before work, he would practice many times what he had learned, such as the Sam Jin Tit Sin Kuen (三輾鐵線拳), Chai Mei Kwan (齊眉棍) (Eyebrow-high Stick) and Lung Ying Bagua Chiang (龍形八卦掌). His colleague Fung Ping-wai (馮平慧) saw it and praised his skills. After Wong Cheung finished a round of stick techniques, Fung Ping-wai took the stick in his hand and after dancing it for a round, he suddenly pulled it hard. Somehow, the long stick as thick as a bowl was broken into two pieces. Therefore, Master Wong Cheung knew that Fung Ping-wai was a person with profound skills. During the conversation, Wong Cheung learned that Fung Ping-wai was a monk who had returned to secular life and had learned Black Tiger Sect martial arts from the disciples of So Hak Fu, the founder of Shaolin Black Tiger Sect. Wong Cheung asked Fung Ping-wai to teach him the black tiger skills, and Fung Ping-wai agreed. Three years later, the british employer returned to the UK, and the relationship between Wong Cheung and Fung Ping-wai as master and apprentice ended there.

After Master Wong Cheung bid farewell to Master Fung Ping-wai, he continued to improve his martial arts and seek out famous teachers and experts. He once learned Hung Gar and Lee's Staff from Kwong Gang San, Wong Fei-hung's disciple at Gou Yu Fong; learned Hung Gar from Mak Chi; learned staff skills from Li Yi; learned Choi Lee Fat from Cheung Loi and Li Gou; learned weapons from Poon Fai Shan. He was proficient in all eighteen martial arts and started to set up a school to teach students in 1928. He taught Shaolin Black Tiger martial arts in a basement on Wellington Street in Hong Kong Island. After the war, he moved to Mong Kok, Kowloon, and taught teahouse staff. His students spread all over the world.

When Wong Cheung was 28 years old, he used the Black Tiger Fist to fight against more than a dozen people. At that time, Wong Cheung was working in the printing room of the Overseas Chinese Daily News near the Triangle Pier in Sai Ying Pun. Wong Cheung passed by the dock every day, and a group of bad guys wanted to kick him into a gang. But Wong Cheung refused. One day, Wong Cheung was passing by after work and was confronted by two hooligans who made trouble for him. Wong Cheung couldn't stand it anymore and pushed the two men away. Suddenly, dozens of people swarmed in and attacked Wong Cheung with weapons. Seeing that the opponent was coming at him with great force, Wong Cheung took the initiative and put into use all he had learned in his life such as the inner and outer Bagua plum blossom steps; the Leung Yi Si Cheung Step (兩儀四象步)(two principles Four Symbols Step), Kirlin Steps (麒麟步), Triangle Step (三角步), etc. to deal with dozens of people and beat them badly that those people fled in panic. A group of passers-by watched it all and everyone applauded in unison. In this battle, Wong Cheung fought desperately against the opponentS and even broke his left thumb, which shows how fierce the battle was.
